Curiosities:

The authentic traditional costume of Madrid is the so-called goyesco, an outfit commonly worn by the upper classes of Madrid from the end of the 18th century to the mid-19th century. The more popular classes eventually adapted it to their own more or less habitual attire as well. This era corresponds to the period following the French Revolution and also coincides with a century in which Spain was under French rule.

It is also internationally popular in Ronda (Málaga), where its goyescas ladies dress up for its famous Goyesca Bullfight, which is held once a year. (For more information see link DIARIO SUR )

Chulapo and chulapa costumes

The chulapo or chulapa costume, so recognizable and associated with Madrid, should not be confused with the regional costume of the community—which is the goyesco—but is a typical costume of the region, used in the 19th century as daily attire for the population; it became the clothing for festive days like San Isidro, La Paloma, or La Almudena, and at the beginning of the 20th century it established itself as the typical costume of Madrid thanks to popular zarzuelas.
