The film is based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Harris, written in 1988 as a sequel to Red Dragon (1981), by the same author, which tells the story of Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a serial killer and cannibal.
The Silence of the Lambs premiered on February 14, 1991, and grossed $272.7 million at the box office, in contrast to its initial $19 million budget, making it one of the most successful films of the year. It was the third film to win the five major Academy Awards: Oscar for Best Picture, Oscar for Best Director (Jonathan Demme), Oscar for Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Oscar for Best Actress (Jodie Foster), and the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay (Ted Tally),
