Protagonist of the Spanish television series broadcast from 1976 to 1978 on TVE's La 1 and later in reruns on La 2, also a TVE channel, created by Uruguayan playwright Antonio Larreta.
Based on 19th-century Andalusian banditry, the action takes place mainly in the Serranía de Ronda. However, the figure of Curro Jiménez is based on a real-life bandit, Andrés López, the boatman of Cantillana,3 a 19th-century figure who, due to legal disputes, was stripped of his job as a boatman and had to leave his town (Cantillana, in the province of Seville) to take to the hills.
